This is a close up view of the  silver scale and makers signature. The certification card and the makers metal label are located on the inside upper lid.The complete and packed sextant in the fitted case of mahogany.

German, signed, “C. Plath, Hamburg No: 9747” on the 11 ½” inlet silver scale, and signed, “D.R.G.M. 724619, 724624/25” on the 9 ½” gear drive fine adjustment index arm, brass construction with oxidized frame,  mirror, filter and telescope fittings, 3 sets of horizon glass and 4 index filters, a swing away scale readout magnifier, 4 telescopes, 6”, 3 ¼” and 3 wide angle glasses, original mahogany case 11 ¾” x 113/4” x 5 ½” , dust brush, sun filter, and original case key, complete with card certification in lid; a fine sextant by C, Plath, circa early 20th century.

This instrument was built in Hamburg by the Carl Plath Company, prior to the Weems and Plath combine. C. Plath was known throughout the 19th and into the 20th as a producer of the very finest sextants. Weems and Plath are currently located in Annapolis, where the started and continues to make some of the finest instruments.

This example is complete and unrestored. No attempt has been made to “buff it” and it remains in its original condition.  We have here a fine and beautiful example of a rare important instrument.
